Drape and Flexibility as Observations

Record how a sample behaves without turning it into a general specification.

Look a little closer

A fabric sample laid flat shows a different aspect from the same sample gently hanging over a support. The way it falls may influence a scarf sketch or a soft-bag idea. An informal observation cannot establish the behaviour of every fabric with a similar label.

A note for your design book

Use an everyday sample that you are permitted to handle. Keep the support, orientation and sample identity in your notes, and compare photographs taken in similar conditions. Avoid manipulating collection objects for this exercise. Describe the visible result plainly, such as broad folds or a firm outline, rather than inventing an engineering rating from a small visual comparison.
