Look a little closer

Care information belongs to a particular product and its materials, construction and finish. A routine used for one scarf or bag should not automatically transfer to another. A historical object in a collection presents additional questions about fragility and previous treatment.

A note for your design book

Keep the label or maker’s instructions with your everyday item record and check that they refer to the correct product. If information is missing, seek clarification rather than inventing a universal treatment. Museum conservation guidance supplies context for collections, not a replacement label for consumer products. The useful habit is to connect the instruction to the object it actually describes.
